First seen in our region around 1968, this defoliator feeds on
a variety of hardwood species, preferring oak, birch, and aspen.
The caterpillars feed on trees leaving them vulnerable to diseases and other pests eventually killing the tree.
Heavy defoliation causes stress to the infested trees, making them susceptible to secondary attacks by other insects and pathogens, which can lead to plant death. They can multiply to destructive levels in just one to two years.
Male caterpillars are mainly brown and females are mainly white when they turn into moths. Females lay eggs on tree bark, branches and other sheltered places like rock piles, piles of logs lawn furniture, etc.
